I want to introduce everyone to a great young lady we have had the honor to work with this summer, Sydney Brost. Sydney is taking over the Community Conversations Blog today to share with you what she’s learned this summer and what it was like working at Mid-Rivers! We’ve been blessed to have her and we wish her all the best with the upcoming school year.
My Corporate Experience
By Sydney Brost
My name is Sydney Brost, and I was given the opportunity to work as an intern for Mid-Rivers Communications this past summer. I would like to share some of the insight I have gained during my time, as well as my own perspective on working for this well-established cooperative. First, let me give you a bit of background on myself.
I am currently a student at Montana State University Billings studying general business administration. I am hoping to graduate from there in 2020 and potentially start my own business. Going to college in the city has been an experience for sure, but I can’t really see myself ending up there. I can only take the hustle and bustle for so long, as I often find myself coming home for the weekends during the school year.
I grew up in the town of Richey, a town small in size and smaller in job opportunities. Growing up I never really had a real job. It started with helping out at my family’s hardware store, to babysitting for my neighbors, to waitressing at the local café. After going off to college and quickly turning into a “poor college kid”, I figured it was time to get a real, full-time job.
Growing up I would always hear about Mid-Rivers, but I never paid much attention to what the company actually did. I remember often seeing their logo sponsoring events or posting advertisements when I was young, and as I became older I learned that they are responsible for one of the most important aspects of everyday life… WIFI! During my senior year, I was rewarded with a scholarship from Mid-Rivers, and then I thought, “Wouldn’t it be cool to work for them?”
So, several calls, emails, and an interview later, I started my first day at the Mid-Rivers office. Having no experience and no knowledge of the field left me pretty anxious to start work that day. “What would they have me do? Am I going to have to learn a bunch of new stuff? What if I don’t enjoy it?”
The second I walked in the door, I knew I had made it to the right place. I was immediately greeted by all of the girls in the office with smiles and encouragement to ease my nerves. I am still amazed how close-knit the office is; after working for only three months I could tell you each of my co-workers’ kids, their pets, and so many different stories they had to tell. Work is a place for well… work, but I am so grateful that I was able to just stop and chat with my co-workers and take a break from the day. I always felt like a real part of the team.
Alongside the scanning, filing, and sorting of company paperwork which occupied most of my time, I was given the opportunity to work on a few other projects that really enjoyed. For example, one day I traveled to a neighboring town’s office to help with some mail sorting, and I was also able to talk with the marketing specialist about some of the work that she does. She showed me how she is working to re-design the company’s website and even let me work on designing a handout that would be used in advertising. During Father’s Day, I was able to design a label and assemble some goodie bags for the office to hand out during the week; I really enjoyed the opportunities to be creative even if it was on a small scale.
A few weeks ago, I attended a company training session which focused on improving the customer experience while enhancing employee morale through effective communication and empowerment. This training really opened my eyes to what goes on inside Mid-Rivers that many people don’t realize. Telecommunications is so much more than just internet and tv, its customer service, its sponsorships, its working together to provide the best service possible for loyal customers.
I have really begun to appreciate all that companies like Mid-Rivers do for our communities. All employees, whether it’s the customer service reps, the secretarial staff, or the technicians are working to better the co-op and improve it in any way they can. Everyone is so passionate about the work they do, as they are constantly looking for ways to progress and be involved in the organization. While there may be disagreements, confusion, or difficulties throughout the process, everyone works together to resolve any issue that may arise. This is a mentality that I should work on more myself, even outside of work!
Working alongside everyone in the co-op has helped me to grow and admire all that Mid-Rivers does. I am so thankful for this opportunity, and I cannot wait to see where my next chapter in life takes me! Thank you, Mid-Rivers, for giving me an experience that I will never forget!
